This is my 7th year participating in the Hawaii Island Humane Society Dog Walk that is taking place on October 27th at their NEW Animal Community Center in Kailua-Kona. I have raised over $18,000 the previous 6 years and have a personal goal this year of $2,000!! WHERE DOES MY DONATION GO?

Your donation will go a long way to helping us reach our mission right here on the Big Island. In fact, with your gift, we will be able to provide for the 13,000 animals that come through our doors every year, assist our community in spaying/neutering their pets, educate our children on the importance of treating animals humanely and help our animals find their forever homes!

WAYS YOU CAN GIVE:

GENERAL FUND: Hawaii Island Humane Society is focused on raising the necessary funds to provide for the 13,000 animals that come through our doors every year. By supporting this campaign, you help guarantee that our doors are always open, for every animal no matter how young/old, healthy or not, every day. Thank you for your kind and generous consideration.

ANIMAL COMMUNITY CENTER: We are currently underway constructing a new Animal Community Center that will enable us to facilitate more adoptions. The new Center will also provide ample space to expand our outreach to schools, particularly for at-risk children and teens who will be able to learn about responsibility, care, empathy and reciprocity through hands-on experiences with the shelter animals. At the Animal Community Center, young children will also have opportunities to participate in healthy outdoor activities after school in a safe, nurturing environment. The Animal Community Center will be a place where our kupuna and veterans experiencing Post Traumatic Stress Disorder will be able to interact with animals in a serene environment that will improve the quality of life for those who are experiencing loneliness, depression, or loss of mobility. The new Center will be a community resource where families can allow their dogs to run off leash in the Dog Parks, or come for a leisurely stroll or hike throughout the trails on the property.

SECOND CHANCE FUND: The Second Chance Fund was created in an effort to save animals that come to the shelter with injuries or disabilities that were previously too costly to rectify. Hundreds of animals have been saved since the fund was created and they have been adopted into caring families. Often, our talented in-house vet or one of our local veterinarians can do the treatment necessary to save a life and make a difference. The lovable three-legged dog or one-eyed cat will be forever appreciative because it was truly given a second chance.

MAINLAND TRANSFER PROGRAM: We have a pet overpopulation problem not only on the Big Island, but all of the Hawaiian Islands. We offer several free and low-cost spay/neuter options for the public and every animal that is adopted from us is spayed or neutered. Every effort possible is being made to find forever homes locally, but there are simply not enough available adopters on the islands to rehome the thousands of pets we receive every year. We are committed to saving more lives and can do so by relocating some of our animals to places where there is a higher demand for dogs and cats. Because all of our pets must travel by air, this program is logistically more expensive to sustain than other types of transfer programs on the mainland.

SPAY NEUTER FUND: In 2017, HIHS spayed and neutered 5,484 pets, a remarkable increase of 21.5% over last fiscal year. Help us ensure that we can maintain this critical level of momentum to help end pet overpopulation. We never want to turn someone away from getting their pet spayed or neutered. Spay. Neuter. Fix the Problem.

HUMANE EDUCATION FUND: Engaging our children in lifelong lessons of kindness, safety and responsibility is the purpose of our Humane Education programs. In 2017, our Humane Educator visited 72 schools, taught 656 classes and reached 8,614 students. We also offer several programs at our shelters for youth and volunteers. Jr. Pals participants learn the basics in animal care and behavior and also learn basic dog obedience training. The goal for each participant is to graduate with access to our volunteer program. The New Leash on Life program affords teens in foster or temporary housing a safe and fun outlet to spend some time with pets in our care that also may be missing that one-on-one connection they need. The teens get the opportunity to not only socialize with the pets in our care but also learn basic dog obedience training. The Manadoob Program for Self Esteem is an essential educational tool allowing children to face the challenges in the world today, and empowering them to do the right thing. This program gives kids the opportunity to think critically and see the world through others eyes, thus developing a sense of empathy to all living things and themselves. Tales for Tails helps kids that are having trouble reading. Children read to the dogs & cats as a way to improve their reading skills and gain confidence. In return, the shelter animals receive socialization and human interaction.
